Types of mushrooms
There are many types of mushrooms! Most of the recipes above use cremini or portobello, but there are many more varieties. Button mushrooms (white): A small mushroom that’s easy to find at the grocery. It’s a young stage of a portobello and has the most subtle flavor.Baby bella or cremini: Small mushrooms with a brown top and a robust savory flavor. They’re a stage older than button mushrooms and a younger version of the portobello mushroom.Portobello (portabella or portabello): The largest mushroom that’s available at grocery stores, it’s a mature version of the cremini! It has a uniquely meaty flavor and is fantastic stuffed or grilled.Shiitake mushrooms: A mushroom native to Asia with a delicate shape and an earthy, savory flavor. Common sauteed, in stir fries and ramen.Lion’s mane mushrooms: A white fungus with a hair-like texture that bears resemblance to its namesake. The flavor is delicate, tender, juicy and meaty: try them sauteed or in sandwiches.Oyster mushrooms: Mushrooms shaped like a cluster that have a savory flavor: almost like seafood.
