Making a recipe that calls for rice vinegar and don’t have it? Don’t worry, there are few options that are perfectly suited as a substitution. Rice vinegar is a vinegar made with fermented rice that’s often used in Asian cuisine. It has a lightly sweet, tangy flavor. You should be able to find it in your local grocery next to the Asian ingredients. Don’t have time to shop for it? Here are some substitute ideas.

Best rice vinegar substitute

1. White wine vinegar

The best substitute for rice vinegar? White wine vinegar! This vinegar is easy to find and you might have it in your cupboard already. It doesn’t have the mild sweetness of rice vinegar, so we’d recommend adding a pinch or two of sugar for every tablespoon of vinegar.

2. Apple cider vinegar

Don’t have white wine vinegar? No problem. The next best rice vinegar substitute is apple cider vinegar. This type of vinegar has a bold flavor, but it works well in Asian style cuisine. Again, you may want to offset the flavor with a few pinches of sugar to mimic the sweetness of rice vinegar.

3. Seasoned rice vinegar

If you don’t have rice vinegar…we’re assuming you don’t have seasoned rice vinegar! But if you do, it works as a substitute as well. Seasoned rice vinegar is simply rice vinegar with added sugar and salt. Here’s the substitution ratio: Use equal parts seasoned rice vinegar for rice vinegar. But for every 1 tablespoon of seasoned rice vinegar, remove ½ teaspoon sugar and ⅛ teaspoon salt from the recipe you’re using it in.
