Got extra melon on hand? Try this refreshing Cantaloupe Smoothie! This one is lightly sweet and delicately fruity, balancing the melon with frozen pineapple and creamy Greek yogurt. If you have this sweet melon on hand, it’s a great way to use up leftovers! It’s bursting with flavor and takes just minutes to blend up. All you need are four ingredients, plus ice.
Ingredients in a cantaloupe smoothie
Melon is unique in smoothies because of the texture it produces: it becomes mostly liquid when blended. So instead of adding thickness to a smoothie texture like frozen berries or banana, melon makes it watery. It’s important to combine melon with another fruit and ice to make a thick puree! Greek yogurt is also perfect for adding creaminess and accentuating the melon flavor. Here’s what you’ll need for this cantaloupe smoothie recipe:
Cantaloupe: Make sure the melon is ripe before using it in smoothies. Remove the rind and chop it into bite-sized pieces before blending. Frozen pineapple: Frozen fruit adds an important texture element to this melon smoothie. Pineapple has a sweet flavor with a light tropical essence that melds well with the cantaloupe without overpowering it. Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt adds protein and texture to the smoothie. If desired, you can substitute vanilla yogurt or even oat milk for a vegan smoothie. Orange juice: Orange juice brings a subtle sweetness and fruity flavor to the smoothie. Ice: Ice adds a frosty, fluffiness to the texture.
Note on Greek yogurt
Greek yogurt is ideal for smoothies: it adds a creamy texture to the puree and a significant amount of protein to make it satiating. Using Greek yogurt, each serving has 10 grams protein or around 20% of your daily need! Substitute other types of yogurt if you don’t have it on hand: preferably plain yogurt without added sweeteners, but vanilla yogurt also works well. For a vegan or dairy free cantaloupe smoothie, substitute oat milk, coconut milk or vegan yogurt for the Greek yogurt. You’ll also want to consider one of the protein adders below to make the smoothie taste filling.
Other protein adders
Want to add more protein to this cantaloupe smoothie? This is a good move if you’re planning to use it as a meal replacement, like for breakfast. Stay away from nut butter here, since it competes with the delicate melon flavor. Here are a few good options:
Chia seeds. Add protein and fiber with chia seeds! 2 tablespoons chia seeds adds 4 grams protein and 11 grams fiber. (See Chia Seed Smoothie.) Vanilla protein powder: Use your favorite protein powder: look for a brand that has natural ingredients and experiment to find a flavor you like. The vanilla protein powder we use has a good flavor that doesn’t taste too artificial.
