Apart from the traditional bread, there’s one thing that I make every year during Easter. Yes, you guessed it – hot cross buns. For me, piping hot buns fresh out of the oven slathered with butter is pure heaven. This year, I’m going to make a delicious variation of classic buns – choc chip hot cross buns. This is honestly my foolproof recipe for hot cross buns. A recipe tried and tested over the years. And I’m so excited to bring you this amazing recipe with a chocolate upgrade. If you love fresh hot cross buns, don’t forget to add this to your recipe repertoire. The recipe for this choc chip hot cross buns start with making the basic bread dough. It’s so easy to put together, you don’t even need any expensive kitchen gadgets. Just a large bowl, a wooden spoon and muscle work. Let your hands do the magic. Start with the yeast mixture. Mix together yeast, sugar and milk. Wait until it’s frothy. As yeast is one of the most important ingredient in this choc chip hot cross bun recipe, don’t forget to check the expiry date on the packet. Once the yeast mixture is ready, mix together flour, spices, egg, yeast, raisins and choc chips. Bring them together to create a sticky dough. I’ve used both raisins and choc chips in this recipe. However, if you’re not a fan of raisins, feel free to substitute with more chocolate chips. Again, with the chocolate chips, you have three options – dark, milk or white. Or a combination of dark and white chocolate chips. Now, the sticky dough goes to a warm spot in your kitchen to rise. Ideally, the dough has to rise at least double its original size. The risen dough needs to be kneaded well and then divided into 16 balls. The dough is allowed to rise two times, and this process is what makes these choc chip hot cross buns so perfect. Before you bake the buns, you’ll also need to make flour paste to pipe the crosses on top of the buns. The baked hot cross buns gets a sweet glaze on top, and that’s definitely going to make them look amazing. Oh, how I love the aroma of freshly baked buns! These taste as good as (even better) the fresh buns from my favorite local bakery. Simply delicious!
