Here’s a recipe that stands out among all special breakfasts: this Cinnamon French Toast recipe! This one has double the spice, featuring it both in the custard batter and in a crunchy cinnamon sugar coating. There’s really nothing better than French toast that tastes like cinnamon toast! Just a hint of spiced sugar brings it all together. Here’s how to make what’s now our family favorite French toast recipe.

Ingredients for this cinnamon French toast recipe

This cinnamon French toast recipe is based on our classic French toast, beautiful in its simplicity. You’ll simply soak bread in a mixture of eggs, milk and sugar, then fry it up until golden brown. The best part is a dusting of cinnamon sugar on the exterior. Here are the ingredients you’ll need:

Eggs Milk Sugar Vanilla Cinnamon Nutmeg Salt Bread from Italian or French loaf, sourdough, challah, or brioche loaf Butter

Best type of bread to use

What’s the best type of bread for this cinnamon French toast recipe? In our standard French toast, we love a good sourdough bread because of its firm texture and tangy flavor. But for this French toast we used brioche bread, which has a softer texture. Either works! Here are a few notes on the options:

Brioche (or challah): Egg-based breads brioche or challah make a fluffy, custardy texture to the French toast. Sourdough bread: Sourdough bread has a naturally firm texture and a slight tang to the flavor. It’s one of our top choices for French toast! Italian or French loaf: Each grocery store uses a different name for this type of bread, but look for an artisan loaf with a firm crust and sturdy texture. You can also use a French baguette. Artisan bread: Look for any style of artisan bread in the bakery section of your grocery store.

Tips for making cinnamon French toast

Once you’ve got your ingredients, cinnamon French toast is a breeze! Because of it’s lovely sweet flavor and crunchy exterior, it’s become one of our family favorite recipes (that and French toast sticks). Here are the basic steps for how to whip it up (or jump right to the recipe):

Whisk the egg mixture. Whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon and salt to make the custard coating. Heat butter over medium heat in a large skillet or griddle. We have a very large griddle so we can cook all 8 pieces at a time, but most skillets require two batches of 4. Cook until each side is golden brown. The exact timing will depend on the heat and your skillet. Roll in cinnamon sugar. The best part! Toss each side of the toast in the plate of sugar. Replenish the spiced sugar for the second batch, since it can become clumpy as it contacts the warm French toast.

And that’s it! We hope you love this recipe as much as our family does (our 5 year old can’t get enough). Let us know in the comments below!
