When it comes to healthy snacks, some of our favorites include granola bars, veggie chips, and for something a little sweet and tart, we love homemade fruit leather.
Why you’ll love this fruit leather recipe
Uses real whole fruit. You only get 100% fruit in them with no artificial flavors, sugar, colorings, or preservatives (which cannot be said for store-bought ones!). Healthy. Like tanghulu, it’s low in fat and naturally sweetened, it’s a low-calorie way to satisfy the sweet tooth. Easy to customize. Similar to candy grapes, you can switch up the fruit used to whatever is in season. Quick and easy. There are just two ingredients, and the process of preparing it is minimal.
What we love about this recipe is how much they remind us of roll-ups! Growing up, they were an absolute treat, so it is fun to recreate them and enjoy this sweet as an adult (along with funnel cake!).
Ingredients needed
Fruit. We used mango and strawberries for this recipe but any fruit works. Lime juice. Prevents darkening of fruit leather. Honey. Optional, but gives fruit leather a sweet flavor without adding sugar. Only add this if you want a sweeter fruit leather.
How to make fruit leather
Tips to make the best recipe
Choose ripe fruits. Using riper fruits will yield a better tasting fruit leather, and have a chewier texture. Blend thoroughly. You don’t want clumps in your fruit leather, so make sure everything is smooth. Adjust the sweetness. Fruit leather is famous for being tart and tangy. If you prefer a sweeter fruit leather, add some honey or maple syrup. Line with parchment paper. Line the baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent all the sticking. Check for dryness. Fruit leather should be sticky and soft. If it’s coming a little too firm, remove it from the oven.
