Are you wondering how to cut an avocado but not sure the best way? Alex and I have a great method for avocado pit removal and how to cut avocado slices. You’ve heard about the injuries that can happen removing avocado pits, right? Here’s a safe way to do it! We use this method all the time, like when we make our avocado black bean quesadillas, avocado quinoa salad bowl, or avocado grilled cheese. Oh and of course our simple guacamole! Here’s our step by step guide for how to cut an avocado, including a video of me cutting avocado slices in our kitchen.
How to cut an avocado step by step
Step 1
Using a large chef’s knife, cut lengthwise around the avocado.
Step 2
Twist the two halves to separate them.
Step 3
Place a towel in your hand and put the avocado on top. With a gentle but quick motion, tap the knife into the avocado pit. Twist it and remove the pit.
Step 4
Do not attempt to remove the avocado pit with your hand! Instead, pull the cutting board close to your body, then place the pit against the far edge of the cutting board and pull back to release it from the knife. (Watch the video for this part!)
Step 5
Use a large spoon to scoop out the avocado from the peel.
Step 6
Place the avocado with the cut side down, then cut it into slices. To dice the avocado, turn the slices and cut crosswise to make diced avocado.
And there you have it: how to cut an avocado in 6 easy steps!

How to store cut avocado
Have leftover avocado and wondering how to store cut avocado so it doesn’t brown? Squeeze your cut avocado with lemon juice or lime juice and wrap it up tightly in plastic wrap. (Exposure to air causes the fruit to brown.) Store it refrigerated for up to 1 day.
