How to cut butternut squash step by step

Step 1

Using a large chef’s knife, cut off the top of the butternut squash.

Step 2

Cut off the neck of the butternut squash, right where the neck meets the base.

Step 3

Use a vegetable peeler to peel off the skin of the neck and the base.

Step 4

Slice the base in half, and use a spoon to scoop out the seeds.

Step 5

Cut a flat edge on the side of the neck, to use as a base.

Step 6

Cut the neck into roughly 1/4″ slices.

Step 7

Cut the slices into strips, then turn the strips and chop them crosswise to create cubes.

Step 8

Slice off the end of the base and slice it into roughly 1/4″ slices. Then chop the slices crosswise to create cubes.

Best chef knife & cutting boards

Alex and I are often asked about the best kitchen tools. And every time we answer, “A good sharp chef’s knife!” A good knife can drastically improve your time in the kitchen, and lasts for years (we’ve had our chef knives for 10 plus years). Here are some of the knives we recommend, as well as cutting boards and the best knife sharpener. These recommendations are perfect for outfitting your own kitchen, or great gifts for a wedding registry or someone who loves to cook! Video: Knife Skills, Gear, & How to Hold a Knife!
