“This one’s my new favorite.” I know we say that a lot around here! But that quote was Alex, one bite into this new Mediterranean pizza. It’s got a lot going on: salty feta, peppery basil, briny Kalamata olives, and tangy sun dried tomatoes all spread on our best pizza sauce. It’s a celebration of bright Mediterranean flavors to make you think of sunny afternoons in Greece and Italy. It’s perfect for entertaining…or a weeknight dinner. Keep reading for the recipe!
How to make Mediterranean pizza
This Mediterranean pizza has a lot going on: but despite that, there’s not a lot of prep work involved for the toppings! What’s on a Mediterranean pizza? Here’s what you’ll need to make this seriously tasty pie:
Thinly sliced red onions Kalamata olives Sun dried tomatoes (we like the ones packed in oil) Sauteed spinach Thinly sliced fresh basil Feta cheese crumbles Shredded mozzarella cheese Easy Pizza Sauce
Throw these on our best pizza dough, more on that below, and you’ve got one extremely delicious Mediterranean pizza! For a side dish, make a salad of crunchy romaine, juicy tomatoes and Greek salad dressing — or a Greek salad itself!
For the pizza sauce
This pizza features our famous Easy Pizza Sauce, a red sauce inspired by our travels in Italy. It’s incredibly simple and relies heavily on the quality of the tomatoes. Here are a few notes to keep in mind about the sauce:
Use fire roasted tomatoes (or best quality tomatoes). This sauce uses fire roasted tomatoes, which are worth finding due to their sweet flavor right out of the can. If you can’t find them, use the highest quality tomatoes you can find. It takes just 5 minutes! To make the sauce, simply whiz up the tomatoes with a garlic clove, olive oil, oregano, and kosher salt. It makes the most flavor-popping, tomato-y tomato sauce that you’ll never use another recipe again.
Pizza stone and pizza peel
To make a truly great Mediterranean pizza, Alex and I have a few very strong recommendations:
Use a pizza stone. A pizza stone is what makes Italian pizza crust crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Here’s the best pizza stone we’ve found, and how to care for a pizza stone. Use a pizza peel. What’s a pizza peel? It’s a paddle used to slide the pizza onto the hot pizza stone in the oven. We recommend this Standard pizza peel or this Conveyor pizza peel. The conveyor version costs a bit more, but we’ve found it’s worth it because it makes it so much easier to slide the pizza onto the stone.
How to make pizza dough
Once you’ve got the peel and stone, you’re ready to make a really great pizza dough for this Mediterranean pizza! Making the dough takes a little time, but it’s well worth it. If you make it the day of, allow for about 15 minutes to make it and 45 minutes for the dough to rise. While the dough is rising, you can prep all your toppings and the other parts of the meal. Here are our favorite options for pizza dough:
Best Pizza Dough This is our standard pizza dough that we’ve used for years! We make it using stand mixer, but you can also knead it by hand. Easy Thin Crust is similar but makes a thinner dough that you roll out — it would also work well here!
