Ingredients in a passion fruit margarita

There’s something about passion fruit that is uniquely irresistible to us over here, so we were excited to try this margarita spin. Color us impressed! The sweet tart passion fruit makes magic in this mix. Here are the ingredients you’ll need for this cocktail:

1 ounce passion fruit puree 1 ½ ounces tequila blanco or reposado 1 ounce Cointreau ½ ounce fresh lime juice ½ ounce simple syrup Kosher salt or tajin, for the rim

Fresh passion fruit vs puree

You don’t even need to find a ripe passion fruit to make a margarita. Simply find purchased passion fruit puree at your local grocery store or liquor store, or online! Several brands sell a pre-made puree to make it simple to add this tropical fruit to cocktails and smoothies. Here’s the passion fruit puree we bought to make this drink. If you happen to have the ripe fruit though, you can make a puree at home! Try this passion fruit puree recipe.

Best tequila for a passion fruit margarita

In a passion fruit margarita, we recommend a tequila blanco (or “new” tequila), which has been aged less than 2 months and has a classic, straightforward flavor. This allows the essence of the passion fruit to shine through, versus with reposado tequila which can overpower the delicate fruit. Here are a few notes on finding tequila for this cocktail:

Any mid-priced tequila tastes great in a margarita. Look for 750 ml bottles in the range of $22 to $35. Anything cheaper isn’t worth buying. Tequila blanco is ideal for a fruity margarita. It has a straightforward agave-centric flavor and spicy finish. Some brands we recommend are Espolon Blanco, El Tesoro Blanco, Patrón Silver, and Casamigos.

On using clear ice

Clear ice makes for a beautiful passion fruit margarita It’s crystal clear and makes your drink look like it came from a fancy bar. Cut it into large, organic chunks to take your cocktails to the next level. Here’s how to make it:

Use a small cooler and 24 hours. Go to How to Make Clear Ice and make a batch the night before. Once you freeze it overnight, you can cut it into chunks. Alternatively, use a clear ice tray. There are now many clear ice trays and makers on the market. Try this ClearlyFrozen Home Clear Ice Maker!

For the rim: salt or tajín

You can use simple kosher salt for the rim of this passion fruit margarita, which accentuates its sweet fruity flavors and is classic for a margarita. Or, consider adding tajín! Tajín is a Mexican seasoning blend of chili peppers, lime, and salt that adds a burst of tangy, spicy flavor to any dish. It makes a fun drink garnish here, though salt is just as tasty.

Make a passion fruit margarita pitcher

Want to make passion fruit margaritas for a crowd? Make a pitcher! This simple blend of the ingredients makes 8 drinks without the need for a cocktail shaker. Make sure to add the ice, as it is essential for diluting the drink! Stir the following ingredients together in a pitcher, then pour into the prepared glasses:

1 cup passion fruit puree 1 ½ cups tequila 1 cup Cointreau ½ cup fresh lime juice ½ cup simple syrup
